The experience

The history

We begin with the story of the olive — its place in the ancient Mediterranean, and the part it still plays at every Italian table. A short prologue to understand what is poured into each bottle of Tuscan extra virgin olive oil.

The craft

Then into the mill itself, to see how olives become oil. Frantoio di Montalcino was the first mill in the world to mill below 0 °C — a sub-zero extraction method developed with the University of Perugia that preserves polyphenols up to 1,200 mg/kg, six times the global average.

The tasting

And finally the guided olive oil tasting: how to look at an oil, how to smell it, how to taste it — and how to choose, use and keep an extra virgin olive oil at home. Served with fresh bread and a few local accompaniments.

What you'll taste — and take home

The visit ends where many guests linger longest: the chance to take a little of Tuscany home. Among the oils you may meet are our flagship BRUNERA extra virgin olive oil, the organic BRUNERA Nobile Bio, the seafood-leaning BRUNERA Yacht Club, and our natural white-truffle condiment — each bought directly from the mill, at a freshness only the source can offer. The tasting also includes our Colori di Toscana line of flavoured condiments.

Private & group visits

Shared visits stay intentionally small — no more than fifteen guests — so there is room for questions and conversation. For a celebration, a family, or a couple travelling together, private olive oil tasting tours are available for groups from two, with the afternoon shaped around you.

While you're in Montalcino

The mill stands in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, the UNESCO-listed landscape south of Siena, and makes a natural pause between vineyards. Many guests fold the visit into a day among the Brunello di Montalcino wineries, a morning in the medieval centre of Montalcino, or the drive on to Pienza, the Abbey of Sant'Antimo and the wider Val d'Orcia. Of all the things to do in and around Montalcino, an hour and a half at the source of a world-class Tuscan olive oil is among the few you also carry home.

Getting here

Frantoio di Montalcino, Località San Lazzaro 242/a, 53024 Montalcino (SI), Tuscany. Roughly 40 minutes by car from Siena and an hour and a half from Florence, set among the vineyards of the Brunello. Free parking on site.
